OUR STORY
From Earth Sciences to building science — a natural progression.
Stefan Mitrovich's path to founding Mafic Design Build wasn't a straight line — it was shaped by a genuine curiosity about how things are made and how they perform under real conditions. Degrees in Earth Sciences and Architecture from Montana State University gave him an unusual foundation: the rigor of physical science applied to the built environment.
Over 25+ years of practice across residential, commercial, and industrial construction, Stefan developed a conviction that most buildings were leaving enormous performance on the table. Homes that were expensive to heat, uncomfortable in winter, and ill-suited to Montana's demanding climate weren't inevitable — they were the result of design and construction that didn't take building science seriously enough.
Passive House certification — first as a designer, then as a tradesperson — gave Stefan the tools to close that gap. Mafic Design Build was founded to bring that integrated expertise directly to clients who want their home to be built right: airtight, well-insulated, durable, and verified to perform.

At Mafic Design Build, sustainability isn't a feature we add — it's the foundation we build from. We believe the built environment has an obligation to perform better: to consume less energy, last longer, and provide healthier spaces for the people who live in them.
Passive House construction is our primary vehicle for that commitment. By combining airtight envelopes, continuous insulation, triple-pane windows, and controlled ventilation, we build homes that use 80–90% less energy for heating and cooling — not as a certification exercise, but because it's the rational answer to Montana's demanding climate.
We select durable, low-maintenance materials that reduce lifetime environmental footprint. We design for resilience — homes that stay comfortable during power outages and weather extremes. And every project has a clear path to net zero, so a modest solar array can complete what the building envelope starts.
